Chuck Wagon Cook-off

If you've talked to Gus, our animatronic cowboy, you'll know that the wagon in the picture here, is a chuck wagon, "the cowboy's rolling kitchen."  Have you ever wanted to see one in action?  Have you ever wanted to taste food from a chuck wagon?  On Saturday, September 16 you'll get your chance.

As a part of Staked Plains Roundup, the Western Heritage Museum, in association with the American Chuck Wagon Association, is hosting a chuck wagon cook-off.  Early Saturday morning, the chuck wagons will begin the work needed to create a great meal.  Official judges will try each of the meals and judge them according to both the food and the authenticity of the chuck wagon camp.  Throughout the day you'll be able to walk around and see each of the camps.  As they start their cooking early, you'll be able to smell the food throughout the day.  If the smell is just too much for you, you're encouraged to purchase a ticket to have one of the authentic chuck wagon lunches between 12-1pm.  Chuck Wagon meal tickets are available by calling the Museum Store at 575-492-2678 and are $10 each.  The meal includes chicken fried steak, potatoes, beans, bread and dessert.  Drinks are extra.  Only 240 meals will be available.  Tickets will be sold at the Staked Plains Roundup event if they are not sold out before then.  With your ticket you'll receive a meal from one of the wagons chosen at random.  Will it be the winner of the cook-off?  Who knows?

Check back next week for more information on the other happenings at Staked Plains Roundup.
