Southwest Symphony Event

The Southwest Symphony is inviting you to WALK A MILE with them as they join the current exhibition at Western Heritage Museum for the Prelude weekend event hosted again this year by the museum.

We’re excited to be hosting the Prelude event for the Southwest Symphony.  Last year we had the Titanic exhibit and the Southwest Symphony musicians brought the exhibit to life.  This year you’ll be able to Walk a Mile in some of the Symphony member’s shoes as we add their shoes and stories to the exhibit of shoes from famous New Mexicans.  We love being able to partner with other entities around the community.” said Erin Anderson, Museum Curator.

Southwest Symphony has for the past few seasons partnered with local entities to create new ways to celebrate the opening of the Symphony season such as last year’s Titanic collaboration and is looking forward to showcasing the personalities and unique stories of its members, musicians and Hobbs’ native son, Dr. Mark Jelinek, the Artistic Director for SWS.

Executive Director Geni Cavanaugh said, “It’s great to kick off our Symphony season with the crew at the Western Heritage Museum as they have a great collaborative spirit and are game to try new things to bring more of the community out for the Arts.  When we partner, we always have a great combined evening!”

The event is Friday, September 29th from 6-8 pm at the Western Heritage Museum and is free and open to the public. For more information please call the Symphony office at (575) 738-1041.

Staked Plains Roundup

Join us for our first ever public Staked Plains Day!!  Every year you may have heard your second grader telling you how much fun they had at Staked Plains Roundup, well, now's the chance for your entire family to experience the fun on September 16 from 10am-5pm.

This Saturday, join us at the Museum as we show you what the Staked Plains, or Llano Estacado, was like.  We'll have spinners and weavers, blacksmiths, chuck wagons, and so much more to give you a little taste (pun intended) of a time when this was the Wild West.  We'll also have dairy people show you the future of the Staked Plains.

You'll have the opportunity to taste authentic chuck wagon meals from 12-1pm if you purchase a ticket ahead of time.  Chuck Wagon meal tickets are available by calling the Museum Store at 575-492-2678 and are $10 each.  The meal includes chicken fried steak, potatoes, beans, bread and dessert.  Drinks are extra.  Only 240 meals will be available.  Tickets will be sold at the Staked Plains Roundup event if they are not sold out before then.

Admission is FREE!!  Bring the whole family out and enjoy a day at the Museum.

Chuck Wagon Cook-off

If you've talked to Gus, our animatronic cowboy, you'll know that the wagon in the picture here, is a chuck wagon, "the cowboy's rolling kitchen."  Have you ever wanted to see one in action?  Have you ever wanted to taste food from a chuck wagon?  On Saturday, September 16 you'll get your chance.

As a part of Staked Plains Roundup, the Western Heritage Museum, in association with the American Chuck Wagon Association, is hosting a chuck wagon cook-off.  Early Saturday morning, the chuck wagons will begin the work needed to create a great meal.  Official judges will try each of the meals and judge them according to both the food and the authenticity of the chuck wagon camp.  Throughout the day you'll be able to walk around and see each of the camps.  As they start their cooking early, you'll be able to smell the food throughout the day.  If the smell is just too much for you, you're encouraged to purchase a ticket to have one of the authentic chuck wagon lunches between 12-1pm. With your ticket you'll receive a meal from one of the wagons chosen at random.  Will it be the winner of the cook-off?  Who knows?

Check back next week for more information on the other happenings at Staked Plains Roundup.
